What is the best way to clear your mind every morning and start a productive day?

I do these 11 morning habits every day. They clear my mind and make sure I’ll have a productive day.

Check out the original article: 11 Morning Habits That’ll Lead to a Successful Day

1: Drink 500 ml of Water After Waking Up

You’ve been asleep for 8 straight hours without water – think it’s a good idea to drink some?

Water energizes you, clears your mind and makes sure so you know, don’t die.

2: Get Ecstatic by Listening to Music

I have a confession to make.

I’m addicted to music.

My whole day is completely ruined if I don’t hear it. If I go 5 hours without it (which I’ve stupidly done) I’m depressed.

I may have a slight bias towards music, but the science is with me as well:

  • Music slows our heart rate, lowers blood pressure and decreases the level of stress hormones in our body
  • Music releases the “happiness chemicals” seratonin and dopamine, increasing motivation and happiness

My alarm is Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, and I continue by listening to my running playlist for some reason.

3: Eat An Awesome Breakfast

Even though breakfast isn’t the most important meal of the day, I can’t go without it.

Breakfast eaten right gives you long-lasting energy, is delicious and healthy.

Believe it or not, I think I’ve found a scientific diet book – How Not to Die. The author spends 90% of the book talking about boring studies upon studies.

Based on that book, here’s my take on a breakfast:

  • A bowl of beans
  • 1 middle-sized fruit
  • 2 slices of bread with tomatoes

4: Become Wiser

Reading books makes you smarter, inspired and gives you practical information.

If you want to read more, listening to audiobooks or podcasts in the morning is a great way to do so. It lets you do something productive while doing morning chores, such as brushing your teeth, eating breakfast and walking around.

Fun fact: reading for 10 minutes every morning accumulates to 1 book a month (Assuming an average non-fiction book length of 50 000 words and the average reading speed of 200 words per minute)

5: Increase Focus by Meditating

Take a deep breath.

NOW!!!

Meditation isn’t some religious belief; it’s scientifically proven to have huge benefits such as increased focus, happiness and productivity.

And contrary to popular belief, it’s extremely simple:

  1. Sit down in a chair
  2. Set a 5-minute timer
  3. Observe yourself breathing. Notice the air coming in and going through your body. Then feel it flowing out.
  4. Repeat
  5. When your stupid brain starts thinking about something more interesting, bring your focus back

6: Write 3 Awesome Things

Gratitude is proven to improve many areas of your life – 31 to be exact. Here’s an overview of all the benefits:

Just write 3 things you’re grateful for, like gum, spoons and your life. Think about how awesome they are and how lucky you are to have them.

I also write down one great experience I had yesterday.

7: Exercise for 7 minutes

I probably don’t have to tell you that exercise improves happiness, health and productivity.

But one thing most people don’t know is that an intense, short workout can give you most of the benefits of a longer, more moderate workout. It’s called high intensity interval training, and just a few minutes of it can give long-lasting effects.

One of those workouts is the 7-Minute Workout, which only uses your bodyweight. You do 12 different exercises for 30 seconds each with a 10 second pause between. Here’s the free app I used for iPhone and Android, which guides you through the workout.

8: Take an Insanely Cold Shower

Taking a cold shower gives you a shock, waking you up like no other thing.

It also trains you to do get out of your comfort zone:

If you can’t do something uncomfortable and difficult for 5 minutes in the shower, how the hell are you going to do something uncomfortable or difficult in real life?Joel Runyon

I shower for 2 minutes after exercising, so it doesn’t requiere extra time. I step into the shower, turn on the coldest and get a shock.

9: Use the Rule of 3 to Focus on the Essential

I spend 5 minutes every morning deciding the 3 most important things I can do that day. I only have to ask myself one question:

If I only accomplished 3 things today, what would they be?

Why is it so effective? For 3 reasons:

  1. It forces you to focus on the most important things. You sort through all the crap and arrive at the 3 things which’ll do the most difference
  2. You’ll actually do it because it’s easy to do and remember.
  3. It eliminates time wasters. Such as nerding productivity for hours every day (don’t judge me!), checking email and watching YouTube videos.

10: Take a Walk to Clear Your Mind

Walking in nature (while listening to hilarious standup) is one of my favorite things in the world.

Going outside has several benefits:

  • It reduces stress
  • If you’re a lucky bastard who doesn’t live in Sweden, it gives you sunshine which’ll make you more alert
  • It provides exercise

11: Eat That Frog

“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” – Mark Twain

Do the most important thing that you’re likely to procrastinate on first thing every morning. Here are some benefits:

  • You’ll be filled with pure ecstasy after completing the morning routine, so you can tackle that task with superhuman motivation
  • If you do it every day, eating frogs will become a habit – making it easier in the long run
  • There’s a minimal amount of interruptions in the morning, so you have time to finish everything before life happens

Start Your Own Morning Routine

If you don’t have a morning routine, my tip is to choose one habit and make sure you’ll stick to it.

If you’re already a morning routine master, please do every habit which intrigues you.

It can transform your day
