How to Start Guest Blogging
If you want to get your voice heard, then guest blogging is one of the best routes to go down. It is also a ridiculously simple concept. You produce content. Instead of posting it on your own website, you have it posted on somebody else’s website. By doing this, you will be able to highlight the expertise that you have, which is great!
While the whole premise is rather simple, it is important that you do things in the right way. This way you can be sure that your guest posting is as effective as possible. This is why we have put together a guide to guest posting. This is not a complete list of strategies, but you won’t go far wrong if you opt for a strategy from this list.
Become an Authority
Your first job is to become an authority. You need to demonstrate that you know exactly what you are talking about. Let’s be honest, the vast majority of websites online have people who really do not know what they are talking about. As a result, these people are not able to put together articles which others genuinely want to read. An authority will know how to put together a unique article which draws people to a website.
You will need to go to extreme lengths to generate the knowledge required to be an authority. You will need to invest hundreds of hours into research. If you can do that, you will benefit a whole lot more from guest blogging.
Start to Build Your Guest Blogging Portfolio
You can’t get in touch with editors right away to publish your guest posts. Instead, you are going to want to build up your own blog. This will be where you publish your writing. It is important that you have social media tied into this blog to make sure that content distribution is easy. You do not have to go to crazy lengths to start building up your portfolio. There are some people out there who will use a free blogging platform such as WordPress. If you already have an existing website, and it is likely that you do if you are looking to guest blog, then you can just add a blog there. It doesn’t matter too much with what you do. All that matters is that you have a record of your writing.
In addition to this, you are going to want to focus on social media. This will play a key role. It will allow you to reach your target followers. Although, one word of warning here; it is important that you do not buy followers. It is better to have a couple of dozen people that genuinely care about what you say over a couple of hundred ‘fake followers’ who are either not real people, or people who will just not pay attention to what you put on your blog.
Research your target sites
While you are building up your blogging portfolio, it is time to get in touch with potential publications that you can target your blog posts to.
There are some major websites out there which allow guest blog posts. The top ones are Huffington Post and Forbes. However, they can be difficult to get involved with if you are new to the whole blogging scene. Thankfully, there will be plenty of blogs in your industry that you can target. By all means, go for the bigger sites, but there is no guarantee that you will have your post accepted on there, particularly if you do not have that much of a following!
Present Ideas to Editors
Once you have a few websites that you potentially want to contribute to, you will be able to start to come up with ideas that you can present to potential editors. You can then send these via email. Before you do so, however, it is important that you check the website to see whether they have any submission guidelines in place. If they do not, then check out the content that they have on their website. You will need to come up with ideas that are roughly in line with what the rest of the website offers, otherwise you will not be accepted.
One word of warning here. When you are putting together a proposal, it is important that you keep the first email short. Just give a brief overview of what you are able to do. Include a couple of article ideas and you are done. Long emails do not get read!
Create a post
Once you have been giving the ‘go ahead’ to produce some content, then get in touch with the editor. You will then be able to provide them with an expected delivery date. It is important that you stick to any guidelines that the editor has given you.
It is important that the article you create for the editor is 100% unique. You can include links to websites and all of the references that you used. If you have images, then it is important that you include them in the content as well as details of any licensing required for those images. You will want to ensure that the content looks as fresh as possible.
When you are formatting, it is important that the guest post is easy to scan through. When people head online, they do not want to read through pages and pages of text. They just want to find the information that is most relevant to them in a quick manner.
Promote the post
Once the post is live, share it with your social media following. If there are any comments, then respond to them. It is really going to help. You may even want to give your followers a bit of a nudge to make them share the content.
Repeat the process
You are not going to achieve success overnight. Continue to promote yourself and you will slowly start to see the traffic on your website increase.
